How to use icons to enhance your designs

It’s incredible how icons, these tiny, sometimes elusive cute illustrations can do so much for your work. Icon creation has become a giant industry because of the many, many advantages they can bring to any design. They add visual cues to your headings, work as buttons, separate your website sections, and overall give polish and professionalism to your web or application.

Iconshock interview: Css mastermind and sushi addict Jina Bolton

Jina is a must reference for all of you working in web design  & development. Her opinions on CSS are one of the most respected in the designer community, being a frequent speaker in the web developer’s conference circuit and being a consultant for the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative. That is big stuff for a lady so cute my friends! The W3C as you might know, is nothing more than the World Wide Web consortium, the international organization that develops all web standards. So if this girl has something to say you better listen!

Iconshock interview: Top web designer and premiere Mom Randa clay!

I envy the productivity of a mom. What would happen if mom’s ruled the planet… Have you ever thought of that? I’ve changed diapers, fed and played with children, as I helped raise my little nephew, so I kind of know the drill. A man can sure do all that stuff and certainly do it well. But still, mom’s have always that extra endurance … Its almost as if motherhood is blessed with super powers form the deep beyond that allows them to play football, help out with math homework and at the same time, make that super energy vegetable soup that overshadows a red bull beverage.

Well, you can add to that list designing very cool web pages if you are Randa Clay. This is a lady that gets so much done it makes us feel lazy. She has not one, but two boys, and still manages to run one of the most visited and well respected design blogs in the net. She is kind of an odd case, because she actually majored in music before turning into design. Web design appeared after she had her first child, and she is completely self thought. Some girl! I am very honored to have her featured here, so I appreciate all your lovely comments to express admiration for such a talented designer. You can visit her at her design blog Randa Clay.com or at her personal site Honestly Crazy.

Adding depth with 1px lines

Sometimes subtle details are the difference between an amateur design and pro work. It’s incredible how tiny, almost invisible touches make a whole difference in the way a design is perceived. In this article by Henry Jones for “Web Design Ledger”, he shows us how a 1px line can add depth and separation to your images in a web layout.

Picture China’s online censorship

Google’s recent announcement of their bail out from China brings to the world’s attention, (yet again) the hardship and sometimes irrationality of Hu Jintao’s government censorship. This info graphic by our dear friends of “information is beautiful” gives us a lot to think about.

Wordpress theme from scratch

This is one of the most clear and useful tutorials I’ve read on the subject. Lam Nguyen made this series that explains step by step how to create your own Wordpress theme out of nothing. You don’t have to necessarily stick with what the free themes or commercial ones offer you. You can always do it yourself as the punks once said, with the aid of good’ old Photoshop or Gimp. Extremely recommended tutorial for anyone serious about blogging.

Will fixed dimension designs disappear for good?

not more than twenty years ago, almost everything had a fixed design. If you designed a book, you knew that the user will be reading that book exactly the way you meant it to be read. Information didn’t have changes is its way of being assimilated from the publisher to the consumer. But times change pretty quickly and design is facing a new conceptual battle. Check out these cool reflections by the good people from The positive Space Blog.

Building the UX dream team

How can you assemble the perfect guys to develop killer Ux projects? User experience design is a relatively new area compared to all the other facets of design and technology, and it’s very difficult to know really who you are hiring just by their resume and interview. Anthony

Aspects to take care of in a minimalistic layout

Mies Van der Rohe is one of the most influential sculptors of modern society. This German born architect made a body of work that has influenced urban landscapes since the 50’s. One of his most coined phrases was “less is more” and that has become the main concept behind minimalism. Check out this straightforward post by Sarah for Your inspiration web. where she enumerates the main aspects to keep an eye on when going towards this timeless tendency. Examples included!
