Is there a “correct” way of conducting usability research?

I just found out this pretty controversial article by Anders Toxbow for “UI patterns”.

In this article he debates between two ways of user testing; Testing and usability research by the same developers who are building the product, or testing and research by unbiased users… Is it a matter of from or concept? Pick your side.
