How and when to use help elements in your designs

Something crucial when it comes to usability is providing users with some sort of a guide into our designs. Be it a web page, an application or a simple menu, everything has a system and not everyone has to go by intuition. The thing is to find a balance so "help” aids don’t become obtrusive and discourage our users. Find some great information about this subject on Matt Cronin’s article for Smashing magazine.
