Forgiveness in User Interface design

“Forgiveness” as a concept that not only relates to the image of a guy running down a street in the middle of the rain shouting his lost love’s name. In user interface design, “forgiveness” relates to everything you can do to allow users to correct their errors. Like when you delete a file, the OS always asks you if you are completely sure. Even then you still have the recycle bin.

Famous design blog Janko at Warp Speed made this interesting post that talks about ways to implement the concept on your own designs.

So “Forgiveness” is like idiot proofing for dummies. That is something we all benefit from. From what I read we use it everyday without ever really paying much attention to it. That is a really good piece of useful advice for web designers to implement into their sites. We have all come across a situation where we had to undo / retrieve what we had worked on or done. I believe that Windows Vista went to far and that is precisely why Windows 7 is so popular right now. You had to confirm even the simplest action and then elevate your status to administrator privileges to get anything done! So a balance between the two like in the article is a really wise way to go.
    Thanks for posting G.

  2. i like anything that thinks for me cuz i rush around n when i do i make more mistakes. So having a browser that spell checks everything i type is great, seeing it work in so many other ways makes it user friendly cuz im working with technology instead of against it by making mistakes that it cant recognize.

Thats one awesome thing about the G2 phone. Its touch screen so the little keys are often mistouched and it will figure out the words for me even if i type every letter one to the left… “gone” would be “hpmr” which would confuse most dictionaries, but aha, not mine!!

@Jjay Do you think Android more user friendly than the iphone’s OS?

  4. its completely and easily customizable except for the keyboard and base program (so i cant get rid of a retarded emoticon in the keyboard or view animated gifs) besides that im not sure. Each has their benefits and weaknesses. I think which is better for which user is based upon the user itself.

For example the g2 doesnt work well if you miss letters in words, so if you mis-spell words by missing letters for example and l in parallel, it gets easily confused. But if you cross vowels it fixes it right away. Other phones have different auto correction parameters that differ and might be more helpful to a select group of people than others. Thats whats great about variety – you get to try them out n pick one that suits you.
