EA game Spore researched the UX way

To me, there is a fundamental mistake when “interaction” is considered the main goal in videogame testing. Interaction and entertainment are key factors, but the focus should be usability, as it encompasses the former. If you have good usability you can involve the player in emotions; Thus, create a successful game.

Bolt Peters and EA Software undertook a year long testing project for their much talked about game “Spore” with an usability approach in mind. Check this article by Nate Bolt and Tony Tulathimutte for the Boxes and arrows blog to find out all the details of their UX testing approach. Plenty of information and even videos are included. Fantastic post!

  1. Thats how you build a franchise – get people emotionally involved and connected into the story. Look at Final Fantasy, there ya go!

@Jjay Did you read this article Jjay?

  3. I skimmed. Its a lot about research and studying players and feedback over tasks and time constraints and self motivation. All of which sounds boring to me. If it has a good story line im into the game, im motivated to bring the character through the story n see the outcome. Others might like to write their own story, im a crappy gamer so i need more than just action. So I like metal gear solid, final fantasy, drake uncharted fortune. Matrix. For just game play i need more kid style games cuz i suck.
So if they studied me and i didnt have a storyline and i didnt have pre-set goals, and im supposed to make them up on my own – i wouldnt care…sorry.
