Attention iphone users, big brother knows where you are.

Check out this very interesting article made by Sarah Perez for Read Write Web where she discusses with developers and hackers how mobile phone apps are gathering personal information from users. The difference between web analytics and iphone spying is that each iphone has a unique ID. If you add that to GPS capabilities, I think we can all kiss our anonymity goodbye. Be concerned.

Not the least bit surprising with the advancement of smartphone technology G. Yet they still have trouble catching the real hardcore criminals. It is the newest wave in data mining if you ask me. linking this article with one of your previous ones that talked about AR = Augmented Reality and the app TAT Augmented ID can really put this article into better perspective. The more personal information you post online the more intrusive the developers seems to become. It was just a matter of time before it all became general public knowledge. Pinch Media is going to face some serious legal issues in the very near future. Facebook already violated Canadian privacy laws and was forced to change and this is much worse case because they are accessing Facebook for user info that is not normally associated with using the iPhone. This seems the price we are going to have to pay for cutting edge technology. I don’t use any of the apps they have listed G, but I am keeping my eye out now and I will check now before I buy or install any new apps on my iPhone.

Thanks for coming across and sharing this really great article with the community G. I for one greatly appeciate the heads up and warning as to just what Pinch Media is doing.

Sprint Provides U.S. Law Enforcement with Cell Phone Customer Location Data!

Big Brother is watching and apparently he’s using Sprint to do it. Recently, it came to light that law enforcement agencies have been tracking the movements of millions of Sprint subscribers via GPS for over a year.

Sprint Nextel’s very own Paul Taylor, Manager of Electronic Surveillance, lamented on the sheer volume of requests the company’s received in the past year for precise GPS data for Sprint customers. How did the company meet such high demand? Apparently, his team built a special “web interface” which “has just really caught on fire with law enforcement.” I’m glad that Sprint’s plans to streamline the customer service experience don’t stop short of those who serve and protect, but as the EFF points out, plenty of nagging questions remain, including: How many individual customers have been affected? Is Sprint demanding search warrants? How secure is this web interface?

So it looks like iPhone users are not the only ones that have to be concerned with being monitored without their knowledge or permission. This is a very slippery slope the cell provider is on.
Have other cell providers been doing this behind the backs of their customers without their knowledge. It gives us reason to pause and wonder just what is going on behind the scenes with all cellphone providers nowadays. Between software and now the law enforcement putting everyone under constant surveillance it is no wonder we can appreciate and place a higher value on our individual privacy than ever before!

Doesn’t sound very different from Orwell’s 1984 doesn’t it? I’ll make a post on the sprint case this week Zandor. Thanks a lot for your info. Scary.

  5. theres cameras on storefronts, watching intersections, people record videos every five seconds. you never had anonymity. the illusion of it is now stripped away. thats all.
