Will fixed dimension designs disappear for good?

not more than twenty years ago, almost everything had a fixed design. If you designed a book, you knew that the user will be reading that book exactly the way you meant it to be read. Information didn’t have changes is its way of being assimilated from the publisher to the consumer. But times change pretty quickly and design is facing a new conceptual battle. Check out these cool reflections by the good people from The positive Space Blog.

Christmas

Apart from the actual religious belief behind the meaning of Christmas, this season is a reminder that we humans are made from the very same essence, and we all occupy the same planet. Be it Jewish, Muslims, Mayans or whatever, there is no reason to perpetuate intolerance and bitterness. We are in the end, just one. From the bottom of our designer hearts, we wish you a merry Christmas full of love and happiness. Merry Christmas from Iconshock!

Building the UX dream team

How can you assemble the perfect guys to develop killer Ux projects? User experience design is a relatively new area compared to all the other facets of design and technology, and it’s very difficult to know really who you are hiring just by their resume and interview. Anthony
Colfelt
made this incredible two part article for the “Boxes and Arrows” blog, where he signals out some key details you can bet on to find just the team you need.

Garbage city rises in the outskirts of Cairo

Check out this article by Moe Beitiks for the Inhabitat blog where we can see incredible images of the garbage wastelands of Cairo. I’m posting this article because I felt this is an image all of us have to accustom to, since this is what world leaders have agreed to turn the Earth into at COP 15. And it will surely happen if we as individuals don’t take action now.

Aspects to take care of in a minimalistic layout

Mies Van der Rohe is one of the most influential sculptors of modern society. This German born architect made a body of work that has influenced urban landscapes since the 50’s. One of his most coined phrases was “less is more” and that has become the main concept behind minimalism. Check out this straightforward post by Sarah for Your inspiration web. where she enumerates the main aspects to keep an eye on when going towards this timeless tendency. Examples included!

Talking about mobile style sheets

With the increase of web ready mobile phones, the necessity of designing friendly websites  for handheld platforms is unavoidable, and also imperative if you want to have a bite of that almost 10% of the internet’s traffic. Dominique Hazaël-Massieux talks about ways to approach this challenge in the “A list apart” blog. Beware, a read for developers.

Long tail user experience in UX design

A few times have I found such a easy to read, thoughtful and reflexive article as this post Andrew Maier wrote for his web site UX booth. Andrew talks about how user interface designers must deal with creating not only an accessible and aesthetically pleasant product, but to engage users in a long term relationship. There must be a real, breathing interaction between the platform and the user so the product becomes a dynamic part of peoples lives. As an example he mentions myspace, facebook and linkedIn, bringing to light their virtues and failures. Excellent read not only for developers and designers, but for just about anyone eager for an interesting article.

First Apple commercial ever

When we think about Apple, we are likely to remember the minimalistic and imaginative commercials featuring Justin Long.

“Hello, I’m a Mac” is a classic now. But, dear friends, I want to take a leap in time, and fly you into an age where Google was not “Big Brother” and every girl wanted to have an “Alf” Hairdo. I’m talking about the first Apple commercial ever aired, on the 22nd of January of 1984. In fact the date was not randomly planned, because they based their spot on George Orwell’s “1984”

Back in those times, the computer giant was IBM (who?) and Apple represented a real alternative. It’s incredible how things change. Do you think Apple’s still a viable alternative, or a prohibitive luxury? The flick was directed by the then legendary director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner” and now average blockbuster filmmaker Ridley Scott. Times do change.
